Hi all,
As of yesterday, I started a new guppy breeding project. I have various different setups in my apartment, one of which is a guppy setup. There are 9 guppies in that tank, 3 males, 6 females. The 3 males are all completely different, One male is a yellow cobra, one male is a purple moscow, and one is.. well what he is I don't know but he looks like he may have some Endler in him somewhere because of the red stripes on his body and the black bars he develops when he's happy.
Our female guppies are an assortment of different varieties as well. All of the guppies are completly unrelated, not even distant distant cousins. We've been allowing them to breed uncontrolled in their tank for some time and have been raising various generations of fry.
Recently, some of the fry started to sh ow some amazing colouration. When I figure out how to get my camera to take a decent picture I will post some. I picked out the 6 fry and moved them to my 10 gal tank in my bedroom. They are all perhaps .75 inches or thereabouts. One is definetely a male, he is also almost certainly the son of the last male guppy I described. I assume because of their similarity the other fry are his brothers/sisters. So far it's 5 females but that could easily change, some are getting red on their caudal peduncle which might suggest males.
My plan for the time being is to let them grow up a bit more together and see what sexes they turn out as. I am hoping I end up with one male and 5 females as the male I have currently is quite nice. Of course, this may not end up the case, but Im hoping at least a few are female. The plan then is to allow them to breed and raise the fry to see how many turn out like the parents. Once I have bred a few generations with 80+% expressing the same trait, I will outcross some of those fry to either the father or the fish I suspect is the mother.
The hope is to be able to develop a stable line of these guppies.
I am wondering what everyone thinks?
