Is it at all possible for females to build bubble nests? In my sorority tank there's a definite one forming, and quite a big one at that too - it's right along the full side of the tank. The only female I had thought that perhaps was male is the first one I bought from a LFS, simply because of the way she flares. But other than her evil face, she looks female. There's also no agression with her and the other's, I've never had any problems since the group was established. I was planning on purchasing a male to breed from, so just need to work this out first as I won't be able to buy another if this is a male. So confusing.. I'll try and get a picture at one point - but it is difficult ti get a flare from her/him.

it is possible people often post with the odd female bubble nesting, theres a small one in my female tank too :good:

Yep, I've had females build nests. They usually aren't as big as the male's nests...but they can do it!

this is a nest by one of my females

Err..

Sorry for bumping this up, but the "female" I've been referring to I've now been watching since early this morning. I've sat and watched "her" gradually build the nest up, and display to any other female that comes near. In particular, a purple HM female is now showing vivid vertical stripes and keeps going up to examine the nest. The "female" is chasing the others and guarding "her" nest. I'm beginning to think my diagnosis of her being female is most certainly male now - I've never seen "her" act like this. Now, I had been planning on breeding them - but I was in the middle of organising a HM male for one of the HM females. So, do I take him/her out and put him/her in the divided tank or just leave them be? No-one has been bitten or harmed as of yet, and the purple HM definitely looks ready to go - just waiting for the nest to be to her standards.. how would a HM x PK come out?

Your fish is most probably a short- finned male. Most pet sotres do not know this, and therefore just put them all together. Check "her" for a gravid tube sticking out of her area. if there is not one there. "She" is a "he"But. It is also possible that she is gay. Or that she can produce her own fertile eggs already ready to hatch, as in a he-she. You can never know with bettas.

When I mentioned this before, yes she does have the egg spot which is easily seen - hence the reason I thought it was a female. Her fins appeared to look female, but from this morning her flaring and displaying is really enhancing her fins - make her look more male now..
 A he-she fish? Oh my..

I really am confused.. no idea what to do with this.

It is a PK male/female. Got pics, not very good though - can never seem to get a good pic of this one..
There's a really dark pic which is probably the best to see the fins, but I forgot to put the flash on.. duh. So, not sure if anyone will be able to make it out.

Everytime I put the camera down he/she stops showing off

I'm no help on deciding if that fish is male or female. My first thought was male..but then I thought female. I think the long body makes it look male, but the white spot suggests female...I dunno...
Either way, I lightened up that top pic for you. Hopefully someone else can see a tell-tale sign that will show if it's male or female

eta: The more I look at it, that anal fin looks "male" also.

thats a male, almost certainly. there is no white spot on the belly, if its the spot on it belly in the first pic, look again and look at the plant and colour of the gravel in the backgound, you will see what i mean :good:
