a coupoe choices of sand are play sand(that kids use in sand boxes) or tahitan moon sand(it's black)

I'm thinking of getting a new tank and am trying to decide on sand or gravel too. I had sand before but felt my plants didn't grow as well and it was a bu**er to clean it at times. Gravel is easier but sometimes doesn't look as good.

Going by the tank pics seen i am tempted to go back to the old sand!!

Hope you make the right choice for yourself

There's loads of different sands available. Ones you get from your lfs will be cleaner (like tahiti moon sand) but are far from cheap at about £10 for 10kg. I use argos playsand in all my tanks at £2.50 for 15kg.

With any sand, you need to put a small amount in a bucket and rinse it with water; filling and emptying the bucket until the water runs clear. This way you won't get a cloudy tank after putting it in and filling.

I have aragonite sand in my tank, it's usually marketed for marine tanks, since it raised the PH and KH and helps to lower nitrates. It's perfect for african cichlids, but if you're keeping more common community fish, I'd recommend play sand. Just rinse it really well before adding it to your tank.

WOW! I have gotta put sand in mine after seeing these pics

It will be a mess changing over but it has to be worth it...are sand tanks easy to clean though?

took most of my wood/rocks out yesterday so not much to do really:)
