Yep That looks a lot like a wild betta. People bred them in captivity over a lot of years and eventually got the stunning colors you see today. I still love the wild look they have.

betta splendens didn't originate from betta edithae, they originated from wild betta splendens. There are many different species of wild betta.

i thought the name splenden was the lfs or the long tails variety thats has been made from inbreeding and mixing, like the majority of us have. eg veils, crowns, deltas.......so how could there be wild betta "splendens"?
isnt edithae a wild species of betta?

There was no new scientific name created from domesticated bettas. Wild bettas are called betta splendens, and so are domesticated. I believe they just look like dull plakats with red/green undertones. Betta edithae is a wild species.

Here are some pics of wild splendens, they look like imbellis basically, but with a red operculum instead of green. All the splendens complex look alike if you ask me :p
I had a pair of edithae until recently, they are cool fish. I gave them up to be put in a display tank at work. Not only are they not splendens complex, they are actually mouthbrooders rather than bubblenesters! Sweet, no? I love mouthbrooders.

Here's the IBC list of all betta species, complete with pics.

thanks for that link of the betta species. very helpful.
i decided to buy them, couldnt help myself.

would you say then that my male is a "wild type" male? i bred him with a cambodian red female and got one fry survive(my fault) and he looks exactly like his dad only with a paler body.
couple of pics of my male pk

colours seen to change with different lighting tho
