I have all sorts of plecs and catfish, and the one thing they all seem to need in the tank is some bogwood to rasp on I hope this helps you to decide my bristlenose lives inside a hollow root i found this out one day when cleaning my tank I put it on the floor and then heard him buzzing inside but he is never out in the day only at night cracking fish though

I wouldn't add bogwood as it will help buffer the ph to a lower level. At least it has in all my tanks that it's in... Although the plecs do enjoy it, in a cichlid tank it's tough to. I think you could add another 1-2 if you wanted, it wouldn't hurt much at all. Pleco's are just naturally shy, especially bristlenoses for some reason. I would reccomend looking in the DIY section on moonlighting kits and set one up. They really look great and it will allow you to watch your fish when they're sleeping and your pleco when he's out rummaging around.

On a totally unrelated note I would turn the heater sideways, I find it gives you a little bit better distribution of heat and it won't make the heater kick on/off as eratically.

Most plecs need some bogwood to aid their digestion (even omnis like bristlenoses), if you cant add it - then you either need to find a plec that doesn't need it (which'll be tough - go for the carnivores), or do without.

I've answered on your identical thread - personally I dont think plecs are best in Malawi tanks, synos are great though.

I have bogwood in all my tanks, and it hasnt altered their PH at all, my water is a neutral 7.0 and it doesnt change. Bogwood WILL change PH if you dont prepare it correctly and let a lot of the tanins get into your water.

I'm with Lisa on this one as well, as not all plecs are well equiped to deal with the harrassment that they will get from cichlids, but syno'd have a mean streak and know how to fight back. So I'd get a new tank for the BN OR take it back and get yourself a syno.

if i had to i could always place him in my 20 gallon amazon tank so it not a problem.
