I have had my tank set up for about 3 months now. I bought 6 Guppies quite recently. All except 1 female have died. I bought another male on Saturday to keep the female company. He has been fine up to today. Today he looks like he is dying. He's been sat in the plants all day and his breathing has been laboured.
I have done water tests today and everything is fine.
Does anyone have any experience of Guppies that can offer me some reason for them dying like this? Why would one out of seven live and the rest die? All the other fish in the tank are absolutely healthy.
Mick.

guppies have became very weak due to inbreeding for there colours, which weakens there immune system. are they flicking/rubbing or any other thing that may lead you to think they have a disease?

No they just seem to be near the top of the tank

Are the gills red and inflamed, or pale with excess mucas on them.
Is the fish bloated or skinny looking.
Is the fish pale or darker in colour.
Any flicking or rubbing going off in the tank.

No, one minute they seem absolutely fine, swimming about and looking healthy, the next time I look at them they're at the top of the tank and then they die.

No obvious sign of disease. This latest male Guppy was at the top of the tank yesterday morning and then spent the whole day resting in the plants. This morning he is back at the top of the tank again.

Also what is your water temps? Perhaps lac of oxygen could be a problem if its too hot and not alot of filtration. Specially if your local fish shop where you purchased your gups have colder water and visa versa. I myself have alot of different posts about guppies due to many problems over the past few months and disease. Most of the lfs have had probs with guppies although they dont like to admit it.

It is very hard to diagnose disease in gups as I understand it. Ive been facing probs for months and the battle still continues. Im about to treat with sterazin for fluke etc. I have just finished a treatment with Melafix & Pimafix for Columnaris. I did a two week treatment and its been longer than 48 hours since last treatment and all signs of Columnaris is gone...although my gups are still scratching. Just checked all stats and perfect. So now to treat with sterazin. Yipppeeeeeee!!!! I really hope the battle is at a near close. I have fry that are growing fast...so rather than purchase any more outside Gups...I plan to breed my own. I already have 4 teenage fry..and nine 3 week old fry. I think to get a few healthy breeding stock and start with your own healthy littlies. Anyway...Im not sure exactly whats up with your guppies...but i think observation is a must and as Ive experienced...lotsa lotsa lotsa research.

Perhaps you could read a few of my posts..Cheers..I hope things clear up. Sounds like it could be intestinal worms to me. If your in Australia Sterazin treats for this...and a few other diseases...is safe with plants etc... You just need to make sure you diagnose properly before treatment through Observation.
