I have begun the process of starting my 45 gallon tank. Bits and bobs will be arriving thorugh the week and i will keep you posted but for now, heres a taster of whats on order:

Aquamas CO2 system
Fluval 205 filter
Potassium Nitrate - 500g
Mono potassium phostphate - 500g
Aquili Water Conditioner - 250ml
Red Moor Wood - small
EQJ 4x39W fixture
2x JBL aquabasis 5L
1 x Tahitan Moon Sand
3x D&D daylight bulbs, 1x D&D aqua flora (to replace crappy EQJ bulbs)

Plants yet to be ordered:
Dwarf hairgrass
Rotal rotundifolia
Hygro polysperma

You can see my plan, the polysperma will be eventually replaced by Diplius Diandra. When i get the equipment, i will update this thread and will convert it to my 'proper' journal when started. Any comments/advice welcome!

Looks good :) two suggestions/comments, how about using the tropica substrate, ok its expensive but I reckon it'd be better. Just a thought :)

Second, the layout looks good but try to avoid to much symmetry, if that's what you are after then so be it, but very symmetrical tanks dont tend to look as nice when set up :)

I was looking at the tropica substrate, but I just couldnt stretch that far, ive blown every bit of spare cash on the equipment! Ok, thanks for that tip Sam, but i cant really think how to change it, any ideas?

Tom

Sounds like you will have a set up that will be kicking George`s backside in no time!

One piece of advice, and I am going to shout it:

PLANT HEAVILY FROM THE START WITH FAST GROWING STEMS. AIM TO COVER 75% OF THE SUBSTRATE. DO THIS FROM DAY ONE!

I`ll stop shouting now. It appears that you have done your research.

P.S. My Didiplis diandra is really coming along now and is a fantastic looking plant.

Good luck, Dave.

Fair enough, I know what you mean about being cash strapped, at least with most of the hardware you only have to buy it once.

With that wood, how about having it in the left or right corner and building a scape around that, bit like this one with the wood sticking out of the plants, could look quality.

Ok, tank has been emptied and is ready for the new stuff. As you can see, my 4 remaining fish are livling in a temporary home. In regards to the scape, im going with my old idea, except the hill is going to be offset from the centre to try and get rid of that look of symmetry. Will keep updating as kit arrives.

Ok, ive got everything apart from the substarte and filter. Ive got a couple of pictures of the possible hardscape, just messing around but it will give you an idea of what i am thinking. When i actually do it, the mound will be alot higher and more 'scaped'. What does everyone think? Any suggestions now that you have got a grasp of my idea?

Thanks
