:S Hi! :fish:

Please could anyone who has used glass pebbles instead of gravel/sand for a tropical tank please tell me their opinions of this alternative?

I found the pebbles within the local Aquatic shop and on Ebay, but cannot find any photographs of them being used with Tropical fish.

We have purchased a new 450ltr bow front tank for our 7 large Parrot fish, 3 large Pleco's, 4 Rams, 2 large Angels, 2 large Silver Dollars, 1 giant Silver Shark, 1 Black Shark, 1 upside down catfish and 3 large Clown Loaches, so we want a tank setup that is hardy but still visually appealing!

Help and ideas more than welcome!

Thanks ever-so-much!

i used them once in a gold fish tank and found the gaps were too big and all the waste fell through the gaps, so it depends what size the pebbles are! you could always use them with sand which would fill the gaps and probably look cool.
good luck,

p.s. please, please, please post some pics of your big fish, especially the plecs and the huge bala.

I used the big glass beads (oval, about 1" long) Robbed them from the wife's vase!
Boiled them and in they went
Looked terrible and everytime I vac'ed one would shoot up the tube as it was roughly the same dia. and get wedged.
Needless to say they are back in the vase now.....why do we get these ideas

Hey, but don't mind me no thought...go for it! :good:

Yes, and echo the picture request!!!!!!

Hi Nath1!

Thank you for your message and advice.

How did you manage to 'vaccuum' your tank when sand was involved? Did the sand get sucked up instead of the waste?

Attached are photographs of my Vision 260ltr bow front tank and the housemates.

this is my current setup, as you can see i thought the green glass pebbles went well with the sand???

Hi Codell!

Thanks for the pic!

Your set up is gorgeous! How do you keep the tank clean without sucking up the sand?

you will find the vacum does not take the sand all the way to the top of the tube and just takes away the muck.
thanks for the pics, your shark is a whopper!!! :hyper:

Thanks for the compliment.

TBH its an absolute nightmare to keep clean, with the gravel vacs you end up with more sand in the bucket than dirt lol!! obviously use some filter floss/wool with the internal filter and your laughing keeps the water clear for ages.

Hello Vancouver,

Thanks for your message; I do believe my tanks are overstocked - that's why I've purchased the biggest tank I could find, thereby allowing both tank occupants to move into bigger homes (the cold water occupants will be moving from 180ltr to 260ltr, and the tropical occupants from the 260ltr to 450ltr)!

Both tanks are thoroughly cleaned at least once per week with 1/3 tank water changes. Our fish are healthy and the tank is tested weekly for Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia etc, and samples are also taken to the LFS for tests too = these results are monitored closely and (to date) no variations have been found.

Kind regards,
