I have read through the pinned topic start up's but it confuses me a bit. So The following pictures are of the tank I wish to use. Where do I start off? Is the tank suitable for a nano... I don't have a stand but it's on a book case with a cloth to guard any damage. If the tank is suitable, if it is what sort of equipment will I need to buy first? etc... I have a new filter in my 75 gallon which has a power head and venturi which means I can swap the HOB to the internal power head filter.

I have read the guides but as a near on total newbie so I really don't know what to get first etc.
The measurements of the tank are 31 1/2 Inches long 8 Inches wide and 14 high

Lol I have no idea, the thing that interests me alot is the invert's that come from the live rock. I have a budget of around $100 a month probably, possibly more on different months.

firstly read the pins . they pretty much cover everything. Also you dont really want to be using any filter thing that has been used or is meant to be used for freshwater. The equiptment you will be needing is pwerheads (2 making at least 15- 20 x turnover) a heater, possibly a skimmer and a T5 luminaire (i think a gd make for the aussies is jebo but only for the lighting). Also the initial startup is gonna be a bit more than $100 so save up for a few months while you reasearch.
hope i could give a tiny bit of help :good:

well the filter is a freshwater or marine filter I think.... The heater is already in the tank. In my original post I stated the filter is a powerhead filter I have read the pinned topics but as a complete beginner in marine it's alot easier for someone to really put a laymans terms beginning so I don't muck things up. I have $50 on hand now and $70 On friday. So thats really the information I need in real laymans step by step what to buy and what type for my tank and stuff.

8" wide.... is that a typo?

Personally I don't think that shape would work well if it isn't, you'd just end up with a wall of rock, which isn't a good look IMO.

No why? It's a second hand tank so copper may of been used. I have a copper test kit aswell... and it's not a typo it's about 8" wide

so say if I checked the tank for copper and there are even trace elemants that aren't found via the test they would die?

any more advice?

Sooner or later, yes.

Ultimately, a new tank costs only a small proportion of the overall set up fee, better to spend a little bit more than jeopardise the entire system.

well if you've read all the guides isn't there a list of what to get? When you have all the stuff ready (not including live stuff) mix up 3/4 of the water you need at an s.g. of around 1.026 and get the temperature to about 25 degrees C. Then test the sg of the water (you can mix up the first batch in the tank - it is empty after all). When you are mixing up the first bit of tank water there should be these things in the tank.

1) heater

2) water

3) powerhead to help the salt dissolve

the reason you mix up 3/4 is to allow for s.g., if you filled it and the sg was wrong then you would be in a bit of a pickle, also, it is to allow displacement for the live rock.

BTW I don't actually have a nano atm, so wait for someone who's done it to reply

Quo,
I don't know about in melbourne but in western australia, it is legal to collect coral for private non-profit use. That will save you alot of money, also you could bring one of those big plastic tubs to the beach and fill it with saltwater.

Cheers,
Kuhni

well It appears I won't be doing a nano as buying a new tank lowers more space and my parents wouldn't be happy with it so this 15 gallon needs a decent use..... Brackish?.... Cory tank??? just a mere quarentine tank???

why are you giving up? the copper thing prolly isn't warrented. i am new to this but everyone is soo scared of copper? the ocean contains trace amounts of copper right. if you clean the tank and allow it to soak and leech for a while then empty it out and repeat, i mean it shouldn't take much to clear most of it out.
if you are worried about aqua-scaping you shouldn't. if you got "nano' live rock...no larger than a softball... you should be able to do some things with it...with as tall as it isyou should start the rocks on on side and pile them up to the other very high. with this set-up though you should be very concerned about dead spots, especially on the high side. just make sure you have ample water movement and it is directed to the right spots. also feed very sparingly often.
