Here's a pic of my new tank. There are three guppies, 4 baby guppies, and one neon tetra currently in it. We just had some brand new babies, so there are breeder tanks in it. pics_07_013.jpg

Interesting tank!

I don't believe I've seen such.. "lava".. red gravel before. I love red.

What are you planning to do stocking-wise? Tetras need to be in groups, and guppies tend to reproduce like crazy.. so that tank is only big enough for one or the other.

But the tank had great potential!

I would agree. If you want a guppy farm then I would just take the tetra back to the lfs. But if you like the tetras, then would do the lfs deal with the guppies and then get prob 6 or 7 more neons to make a nice little shoal :good:

I had 3 tetras, but two of them died. The tank is still cycling. I know I should have waited to put fish in it until it cycled, but I didn't. I'm not sure what fish to put in.

Aw, well.. What were you doing with that many fish in a cycleing tank anyways? I'm an old-school fish cycler. But.. thats a lot of fish to put through a cycle like that? Have you ever heard of the 1" rule? That's a great rule for newbies to go by. :)

(If you don't know the 1" rule, its that you should only have 1" of fish per gallon. For example, you have a 10G tank, so you should only have 10" worth of fish in there. Now of course you can't have one fish that is 10" long or even 2 fish that are 5" long. Fish need more room than us as humans tend to naturally give them.

When I was buying the fish, the guy selling them to be told me it was 1" per gallon if it's not filtered, and 2" with a filter.

Try to take what people at lfs say with a pinch of salt, it's always best to ask here for any advice as a lot of lfs employees don't know there a*** from the elbow.

There are some good shops but still take with a pinch and if its a pets at home or something similar take with a bag of salt with the option to buy more salt.

What spudgun was trying to say is that salespeople will always try to make you buy more than you need or should.

Your sales person is very incorrect. 1" per gallon is more than enough, depending on the fish, is actually pushing it a little. 2" is inhumanitarian.(sp?)

I'd return the guppies and trade them for tetras. Tetras are nice fish.. perfect for a 10G. And there's lot of variety, so you might be able to mix and match.

But remember.. 1" per gallon is the rule, no matter what. And really, unless its a betta bowl, all tanks should be filtered.. (except for some very special circumstances, but we won't get into that now)

Yes ethos, you said it in a more politically correct way but I believe spudgun has much more emotion behind it... haha.

lol. sorry was a bit of a rant. I like the tank but a few simple live plants would look nice.

I think you scared lyssa3411 off.

And I didn't say it more "politically correct," I just said it more polietly, something our society is losing.
But hey, I've been known to lose myself once in a while..

Thanks guys. You've been a lot of help. I really like the guppies. I don't really know what to do with everything. I'm very inexperienced, as I'm sure you can tell. Haha. I guess I am just going to keep the guppies for now, and if they get overpopulated, get rid of all of them, and just get other small fish. I love my Dwarf frog!

keep a few males and take the females back. the males are generally the most colourful.

But the tetra does need a few friends.

Good luck.

Spud.
