I have about 14 red platy fry that I've had in a breeding tank (inside my main tank) for about 5 weeks. I noticed today that one of the fry looks permantly bent when viewing from the top. Only one looks that way. I didn't notice it the last time I cleaned their tank, but that doesn't mean that it didn' t look that way, I may have missed it in the crowd. Was it probably born this way? Should I be worried about anything? The only other strange thing is the variation in size of the fry. Some are still pretty tiny and others are almost as big as the sole survivor of an earlier birth (about 9 weeks old, and still in breeding tank with baby siblings). Any ideas about the bent guy?

Thanks

That fry was probably born that way. It probably means he won't survive unfortunately. Sizes can vary in batches of fry. I wouldn't worry too much.

Should I do anything with the fry or leave him be and see what happens. I plan on giving the fry to my lfs when they are big enough.

i would just leave it and hope for the best, probally wont make it,aslong as your looking after them well, you have done all you can.

The two main reasons for this is either inbreeding or poor food quality.
If they are use poor or old foods some vitamins and minerals are missing and can result is this.

I saw this many time on fish farms when a batch of fry had poor foods.

Make sure u use the best foods, and try live foods as often as u can as well.

Another cause of bent spine is variation in temperature. I had a heater break down once, in a tank with platy fry, and several of them developed bent spines. I hardened my heart and allowed my angelfish to eat them - they showed no sign of recovering. If you've only got one, though, it was probably a birth deformity.

I have one guppy fry with a bent spine. He seems to be growing well, at the same rate as all his siblings. I put it down to a birth defect, but while he's happy I'll leave him be
