Excellent description :D Guppies are the easiest fish (along with swordtails) to sex in my oppinion

The description from miss wiggle is also correct, but more advanced. Just google in "gonopodium" and you will get what she means. You use this method to sex platys and other live bearers.

Below is a picture of it.

(clue..... if it looks like it's got a penis it's a boy!)

hope that's not too graphic for a family forum

thanks for all your replys guys that was a great help :D now i just need to no if this one is a male or female because im not sure either thankyou

100% male. no doubt about it. Female guppies dont have long tails like that, nor do they have coloured bodies, generally speasking. Besides, i've once had a male that colour ;)

and yea, about the clue..... i seriously did consider writing that lol.

It's the gonopodium you need to go by. I have 2 females that are almost exactly that colour, biggish blue tails and black bodies. Sexing guppies from colour is like saying somebody has got to be a woman because they've got long hair and a round face. Statistically speaking, that will be true, but there is a surer sign....

If I'm reading it correctly, she's saying he is a male, however you cannot always count on the size of the tail to be the determining factor. It's definitely a male fish.

I said generally speaking :D

I sexed the guppy like so: Although its hard to see the gonopodium , you can evidently see no female shaped anal fin. Thus, it must be a male guppy through process of elimination. Other factors is that male guppies are GENERALLY smaller than females and chase other females around the tank, sometimes even females of other species.

In recent times, when i have been even to maidenhead aquatics, there has not been a single female guppy with the long tail.

OK, i'll swallow my pride... you do have a good point... my comment was not totally clear, sorry. Oh and i am a he.

I was referring to Dwarfgourami's post, actually, since the OP posted after you did, then had a question after DG's post. I should have quoted.

At least I learned you are a male though. But I have had some females with tails that rival my male's.
