These are three kinds of plant living in a tank I just bought. I have identified Java Moss and here are pictures of the other two. Any thoughts on what they are? Thanks in advance.

Yeah, its's all attached by black thread. The whole tank is a mess and I want to start it all over. It is somewhat established already though and I am worried about root damage if I pull the plants from the wood. The Java moss is running pretty wild right now. I am going to take it all out and make panels from plasic mesh and hairnets. I have a terrace idea I would like to try. Here's a pic of the whole tank right now. I am looking to bring the light up from .9 wpg to 1.8 wpg (or more) and add a DIY Co2.

If I do remove the plants from the wood, will they grow in that substrate or do I have to reattach them to another piece of wood or rock?

How about lava rocks. Can I make a pile of lava rocks and let the roots of the Java Fern grow into them. Will the Java Fern eventually spread and take over the whole pile of lava rock?

All of the plants in your tank are fine in medium light and have no need for CO2 or bright lights. I had a group of Anubias nana which is the same as the kind you have that lived twelve years with nothing fancy except clean water. You could add more bog wood to the tank and not have to tear everything apart to restore it. The fern and moss can attach to plastic wood which really improves the look.

Actually I like what you have there - looking at it in isolation it is very 'natural'?

And therein lies the problem IHMO, what makes your setup as a whole appears odd is that fact that it is isolated, a juxstapostion of it's natural look.

To wit: Add some more plants around it and your tank will look bonza!
