Is there a color variety of Goldfish known as a Blusher? I ask as my lfs has several young Fancytail Goldfish who have transparent gill plates giving them the appearance of blushing (like a blushing Angelfish). They're very pretty looking and I'm greatly considering picking one up as I've never seen such a color in Goldfish before. ;)

No its not something ive heard of. Maybe its just got pale gills and the lfs has seen an opportunity to sell a supposed rare fish. Can you remember the body colour? Was it calico? Calicos can get a blush to their gills but its not a rare type so dont pay more than a normal fish.

dunno about that. i read something about someone on aquabid trying to sell some special koi that had no gill plates..... its clearly just abit of a ploy in that case

Yes. No gills is a genetic defect and the fish shouldnt be bought at a higher price. The gill covers are there to protect the delicate tissue inside. With no plate theya re more open to infection and another fish biting.

These fish all have full gill plates. The gill plate is just transparent like that of a blushing angelfish. Let me see if my camera has enough charge to get a picture. I went ahead and bought one of them. She's white with a bit of muted black along with blushing cheeks. I wouldn't call her Calico however. For reference, she was not priced any higher than any other fancy goldfish. :good:

Please ignore the cloudy water. I just did a water change a few minutes ago and the sand got all stirred up. I'll try to get some clearer pics once it settles.

It is a calico fantail. Its very common for them to have pink gill covers as there isnt much pigment to cover the red of the internal gill.
Pretty fish though, i love calico fish.

The no gill cover was in answer to another poster :)
