my lfs sells small java ferns for $1.99. my Q is do they root as the ones they sell are just weighted? and do i put them on something in tank or put it in gravel? any info would help plz.

Yes they do root, but shops ten to keep them uprooted because most people attach them to slate and bogwood instead of putting them in the substrate.

We have planted just lightly in our substrate and they're growing great.

I've read that you can only bury the roots, but the rhizome has has to be above the gravel. Lots of people just tie them to driftwood until their roots grab hold of the wood. At that point you can remove the tie-downs.

i have basicly nothing to tie them to.

also does anyone have any suggestions to any more plants?

How about those lily bulbs they sell at Petco, Walmart, and the like. The lilies will give you a taller plant with a different leaf shape and color. They also grow very fast and can flower as well. You could easily tie the java ferns to any of the ornaments you have.
