My betta (buttscotch) has been acting strange the last three days. He just lies on the bottom of his tank, sometimes on his side. He'll swim up to the top for air everynow and then but then just goes back to the bottom. He's not eating anything either, I've had him for just over a year, but I have no idea how long he was in the pet store before that. Is it possible that he's just old? Is there anything I can do?

Here is a pic i took a few minutes ago and one from a few weeks ago... in that order

Well since no-one has replyed and i know how annoying it can get i will try to give some help. He may be lod i have read they only live for 2 years. Try a water change and see if he brightens up. Try live foods to stimulate him. And most important of all keep him comfortable.
If you have any more questions just ask and i will see if i can help.
Thanks
Sean

I'm no pro about Bettas but have read that you should make sure their water is super clean, and also lower the level so they don't have to strain as much to go to the top for air. When they won't eat anything the best thing to offer them is a small piece (about the size if their eye) of microwaved soft pea thats had the shell removed.
Make sure they are warm enough and keep the light off to lower stress level. Go to the Bettas section and see what you can read up on and also there is alot of sites about Betta care you can find by googling.

If he was mine I would say he had swim bladder problems. Raise the temp of super clean water, dont feed apart from the pea as mentioned. :good:

Mash the pea between your fingers so it is easy to eat and makes more smell to attract him. With liz I would say swim bladder and/or constipation. Unless he has not eaten for a day, it is often advised to fast a day before giving the pea.

Thanks guys for all the advice. Sadly though Butterscotch didn' t make it through the night :(

Don't feel badly.

It is a good idea to fast and feed a pea once a week to help the Betta with their digestion. They get constipated which can lead to swim bladder dysfunction and eventually to a damaged swim bladder--sometimes. Of course we are just guessing here. Of course constipation is enough.

Aurora and liz are exactly right on regarding care imo. But I would add the regular weekly fast.

:rip: buttscoth I'm sorry
