An update on my reef tank

ryansfish5g- if the power goes off, then the top 2" of water will drain back in to the sump. This is because the pipes going in are at the surface and the holes through the base have a standpipe going to the surface this gives the advantage of drawing organic rich water as well. there is enough capacity in the sump to cope with this.

living_dead- thinking about it but don't have one as yet. never had a powercut for years.
hmmm, so there is some kind of back pressure that stops the water from continuing to go into the sump?

Is this drawing correct...(yes, I know a child could do better with crayons)

What is a standpipe?

there is a 1.5" hole drilled through the base of the tank at each end. there is a tank connector fitted and a pipe going to the surface shown above. then this pipe flows to the sump. there are two pumps pumping water to the tank with the holes drilled just below the surface. seen below. this means that the water will over flow back down the returns and the drains until the water level drops below the holes and no more can flow back.

I tried everything to open that file ste2k3. Doesn't seem to want to open. I'm not sure what program opens .dtd. files.

I couldn't see the picture either, but I think I understand now; I thought the bottom of the tank had a hole in it, and the water went straight into it. Now I see that the water is taken from the top of the tank, that makes much more sense.

Thanks for the explanation!

Ryansfish,

Hope you don't mind - here is a modified version of your drawing.

Thanks guys, I totally understand it now.

I originally thought you were defying the laws of physics, at least as I understand them, now I see you are not....phew!
