We bought a male Siamese fighter and for about 5 days he happily lived in the tank. Some of the fish there didn't like him much, but he kept out of their way. Then we got up this morning and he is such an unbelievable mess. We have guppies, black tailed sharks, and a few types of Gourami.
He has shown amazing strength and is still alive, - just. Why did this happen?

incompatibility?
gouramis, sharks and guppies with betta

Oh poor thing! I don't think gourami get on very well with bettas, they can get quite aggressive. Also not sure about the sharks, I think they can be unpredictable. Does it look as though he will recover? I presume he's in his own container now. If he's not too bad, you may be able to treat him, other than that it may be kinder to put him out of his misery.

Well I can get a pic of him for you. He's currently in the nursery. The sharks are ever so placid and I doubt they touched him.
Even in the nursery the tiny fry are pecking him. -_-

He really needs to be away from all other fish. It will stress him even more to pecked at even by something small. He will be ok in a container on his own. Don't have the water too deep as he needs to come to the surface for air and is probably very weak. Use some of the water from the tank he is in as a sudden change may do more harm than good. You must change some of the water very frequently as he is likely to get infected.

I'm not really sure what else you can do. He will need something like melafix added to help the healing and probably a bit of aquarium salt. But you MUST make sure you don't overdose him on either.

Thanks we have already removed him from the nursery. I don't bet he'll survive. Getting pics was so hard and they kept comming out blurred. Here goes though.

On closer inspection his back parts have suffered surface damage (ie scales seemed to be missing). The rear tail fin has suffered the most with bone like threads showing through. He is still able to swim alright if he becomes frightened. He is the right way up in the water but not doing much.

He comes to the surface, in his hospital aquarium, for air occasionally;4 has not taken food. I don't have melafix to hand, but have put a little salt and stress coat in.

What's the likelyhood of survival?

i would try and get hold of some melafix, it's good for preventing any further infections in wounds which would most certainly finish him off.

he looks in a bad way, but doesn't mean he can't be brought back from the brink!

gouramis + bettas = big big nono.

oh and what you feeding him on? i'd get hold of some frozen brine shimp (thaw of course) he might perk up, hard to deny such yummy food!

I believe Gourami's and Betta's mistake eachother for their own kind, therefore they fight. Atleast thats what I read. :ninja:

Sorry about your guy, but I have seen worse conditions where the fish has made a recovery. Good luck.

Hmmm, makes sense; they are related.

Thanks for all your help everyone, all we can do is to wait and see now.
