I think max size is about 12"? I used to have one about 7-8".

Yeah, all you have to do is google 'Chinese algae eater' and you will find that they get pretty big and aggressive when older

I had one that reached 8 inches long. She became very aggressive. But I still loved her!

You will need to rehome him.

Yes you will have to rehome him. You could get a bigger aquarium for him. I read somewhere that they are good with cichlids. You could have a cichlid only tank and put him in it. That would work. Try some think like a 55 gallon.
