Do Young Male Halfmoons Hav The 180 Degree Tail?

i was jus wondering if young male halfmoons hav a tail spanning out to the full 180 degrees or if it grows to the full 180 as they get older?

if it does grow out how can you tell if its a halfmoon or a super delta?
 
halfmoons are 180 degrees, deltas have the same tail type, but do not reach the 180 degree mark.

as far as growing into the 180 degrees, i dont know. i would imagine that they'd be 180 or atleast very close once they have developed full finage.
 
well i ordered in a male and female halfmoon an i got a female short fined giant :S and wat looks to b a copper black dela or sd his fins only span out to 150 to 170 im not great at estimateing but its a fair ways off 180

He is beautiful. His tail won't appear to be 180 until you flare him - did you flare him?
 
yeah we did flare him and thats wen it reached the 150 to 170

i havn't been able to find any info on the young ones to tell me how to define one

either way if he isn't a halfmoon wen i take him bak i'll ask if they can hold it for me ^^

he's too pretty to give up :p
 
kinda hoping that some 1 can tell me how to define one an if the tail will grow out to 180 or if it should b at 180 already he looks like he is around 2 to 3 months old
 
I'm not sure officially, but when I got my baby HM he was 3 months and not a full 180 degrees. He's 4 months now and we're getting closer. I've been flaring him everyday but not overdoing it. If he doesn't reach HM oh well. Your boy is gorgeous!

hehehe thanks i just want to make sure he is a hm becoz hms are so expensive here and detals or super deltas aren't as expensive so im worried bout getting ripped off...

so the isn't really any way of tellin if he is a hm or not is there?
 
Let's get this straight: halfmoons don't breed true. So if you breed two halfmoons together, not all the babies will be halfmoons.

So if the fish isn't currently a halfmoon, there is no way the shop can know if it's going to grow out to a halfmoon. Sorry.
 
how long has he been with you? if he was shiped he wont be in great condition when you get him. hes got nice color ut i dont know if he is hm. give him a few weeks. if you dont like the fish then im sure the breeder will exchange him if you complain enough, no breeder wants bad word of mouth. if hes young he may become hm.
 
well we orderd him though our local pet shop from a huge fish company here in aust called pisces
and as far as i no if we don't sort this out today we void any more exchanges

we got him yesterday
 
Young HMs do grow into their finnage, their rays split gradually as they grow, but as Chrissi said, there's no way to tell for sure if a juvie is going to eventually be HM or not. Keeping the water super clean helps grow the best finnage.
 
He might also just be HM geno (which means he has the potential to sire halfmoon babies even if he doesn't show the full 180 himself)
 
Half Moon is one of those 'iffy' tailtypes, it seems to me... It really depends on conditions- I've seen and heard that you won't get HMs if your water quality is bad for the fry, and seen methods detailing how to expand the angle by cutting the caudal...
