Ok so i had 2 platy females 1 red and 1 gray with black edges to her tail and 1 male platy who was orange with a black speckle ... some time after getting them i found a baby platy in my tank who had survived somehow, he is grey in his body with a red top fin and black edges to his tail... both females passed away to the big fish tank in the sky and whilst at my lfs the other day i saw some comet platies so i decided to get 2 females they are peach in the body with clear fins and black edges on thier tail fins.. so the question is what is damien?

Damien (so called cos hes an evil little bugger)

looks like a gold twin barb with something else, reddish.

i think that he came from the grey female with the black bars on her tail fin as hes almost identical apart from the red top fin,i cant remember how long i had her for before i found him so it was possible she was already pregnant when i got her, the comet platys i got the other week are obviously gold twin bars so why were they marked as comets.. or are they the same? :S

updated: just figured out that mum was a silver wag x gold twin bar so dad must have been red, no wonder he is evil.. he has identity crisis

I wouldn't say it's any of them common colorings, more a mixed color. :) That happens sometimes when you get different colors breeding together. Take mine for example...Orange Wagtail x Rainbow Platy. I now have orange Rainbows, essentially. From front to back it goes light orange to dark orange. Who knows what to call that...

Is he a Variatus? Do you know? He looks more elongated then most Platies.

Hmm, Annastasia raises a good point, though i think photography is more to blame than a variatus strain in the breeding. My thoughts are along the lines of: Red Variegated Twin Golden Barb platy: the variagated describes the reddish spots/patches, as well as the red dorsal, the golden twin barb colouration is extremely accurate(and well picked by spader). For a laugh you could do what those betta breeders do: RVTGB (sounds like some sort of vehicle or missile).
