Plants/moss/riccia On Coconut Cave

you mean hollowed out coconut shells? with plants growing on top?

you could make your own, i'm not sure how you clean the coconuts etc but you would just tie the plants etc. to the top of the coconut surely?

i would actually like to know how to do it and give it ago myself.

:good:

i've seen it done, i would think it's just like you would plant on bogwood except it's a coconut lol. i would like to hear how to clean out coconuts anyone...

:good:

i was driving around gloucester's lfs and saw some for sale at Aquajardin and Aquatic Habitat...
£17+ at Aquajardin...
£27+ at Aquatic Habitat...
imagine my horror..
????

that's where i live! lol i was in both of them yesterday and a few other places but i didn't really look at the plants should of now. i'm going back to aquajardin tomorrow to get a few bits and bobs so will have another look.

let me know what you think of them.
the plants tied to the coconut cave might justify the price.

what was on them? just riccia? btw aquatic habitat is alot higher in price over aquajardin i find and i have a 10% discount card for aquajardin which is good. must be some good plants to be worth £17 though.....

i'll let you know tomorrow after i've been.

:good:

£17 and £27? Bloody hell it cost me 49p! Just drain the juice out of it through the holes, and they way I done it (I only got one part that was worth using as a cave) I threw it around my backyard until it cracked and then I sat for ages with a very big knife getting the coconut out. If you search for coconut on the DIY thread you will find an article on how to do it, I have tied java moss to it, but it doesn't look very good, i've probably done something wrong.

i just did 1 last week

heres a picture IMG_0193.JPG

it dont look nice at the moment give it some time for the moss to grow all over the shell and it will look fab

Right, I made a coconut bra, but same principle :good: I used a hacksaw to cut the coconut in half, though I got covered in milk! Right, now leave it... the flesh dries out and shrinks, and it detaches from the shell. Some funky fluoresenct bacteria grows a little bit, but only on the flesh in places which is totally separate. Then when its dry enough use a spoon to hook out the flesh in one hunk. (it has a skin on the outside holding it together) :hyper: hope that makes sense 8)

I got a coconut, and smashed it with a hammer. Gave me 3 unusual shapes and some smaller useless ones. I prefered the shapes i got to perfect straight cut coconut, looks more 'natural', if thats possible with a coconut in an aquarium .
Havent seen any in my LFS though, but i would pay more than the plant price on its own plus say £1.00.
