I have a new betta, brought last Saturday. Last night I noticed a few things about him that I wanted to get checked out!

First, there is a bump on his side near his tail fin. I think this is normal but it looks quite pronounced and it alarmed me a little. See the "bump" jpeg.

Secondly (this is more of a concern), he looks like he has something on his gill. Its white/gray, and maybe 1/2mm in size. Is it flukes (i thought these were supposed to be tiny!). See "gill1" and "gill2" jpeg.

He's in a Q tank with some tetras at the moment. Water stats are all nominal.

Sorry, the images are not great :(

Some pics with his gills flared. Another thing, is they gray patch under the mouth/chin area normal? I've seen it on bettas before, but I dont know if it is normal or not?

It is hard to tell really. :/ Some of my boys have greyish colouring on their gills, some do not and it is normal for them. Prickles (my red combtail) has grey gills and a grey chin which has gotten greyer as he's gotten older. But it doesn't worry him at all as it's his normal look. Best to keep and eye on things and watch for any changes over the next few days. Obviously if he shows signs of being unwell, itching or the marks change then you have something that will need treating.
Hugs,
P.
