So I have no plans on buying a new one since the death of the last one. But I walk into Big Al's (that I hate going to cause they like to over price) and here I see some rays. *sigh*
But the babies that were born on Feb 17 here in Edmonton Canada are finally for sale. And the best thing is that they are no more than $30 than the last one I bought that was wild caught. So I bought one. And I picked it thinking it was a female (because I have no intention on breeding CFC that is why).
Well it is a boy.
Ok now I want babies, but we have some time to wait.
These are the pics
The little dark one is the new motoro and the other little one is a retic. The big one is a female motoro. There has been no fighting and they all seem to get along

they look nice :D

its good you have a larger female as she will mature sooner than the male

when the male matures and if the female is not ready to breed he will rip her to bits they should be rady to breed in about 2yrs

i would feed them up a bit as the lager female and the retec look a bit skinny

most people really under estimate the amount of food that rays need and rays that size will need 2 plate fulls of prawn per day

with that amount of food going into the tank daily its no wonder that some people have trouble keeping the nitrate down

what size tank are they in

wow they look very cool 8)

hmmmmm i want rays now!!!

Thanks for all the lovely comments!
Retics are not quite as plump looking as say a motoro would look like. He is a little skinny and I really am pushing earthworms these days. Though tonight will be the new boy's first time on shrimp (mixed in earthworms since he seems to like them). They eat about a dozen jumbo earthworms that I cut up for them. Once a week the worms get soaked in a vitamin. They also get feed smelt and of course shrimp, about two per feeding. They were feeding him and his siblings and parents brine shrimp  , so he really has had no taste for anything else. But that will change!!
Two years you say till they start the mating game.
hmmmmmm
They are in a 230 gallon now, looks like I better start some plans for that bigger tank I want!
:hey:
Here is a pic of him by himself

hmmmm everyone seems to be getting new rays apart from me at the moment  I'll have to do something about that soon.

He's lovely EG!!

if you are going to set up a new tank i would keep the old one handy as people used to think that motoro are a good srtarter but now a lot more people are starting to breed them they are finding that once motoro reach breeding size 12-14inch disk they are very very agressive to the females and in a lot of cases they will kill the female

retic are a very underestimated ray they are faily slow groing and no were near as agressive as motoro

2 years sounds like a long time but it goes very fast i have had my rays for 10 months now and they have grown from 3inch to 10inch

if the new ray was captive bred it should eat anything mine eat pellets :D

No kidding that retics are slow growers, lol!
He is about 3 months older than my female motoro and he is the same size as the new baby motoro!
I really have a soft spots for retics though, I love the long tails and are more passive than the motoros! .
The second tank will be in some time cause it is not so easy to find 200 gallon tanks over here as maybe as it is over there. And of course being a girl, a want the best with a custom tank just for rays next time! :shout:

uhhh.....how can u tell if a ray is skinney?
they look like upsidedown plates to me
but nice rays.never ever see em in the US

its fairly easy to tell if a rays is skinny their hip bones will be showing which are like 2 x small triangles that stick out both sides of the tail and they will also have a dent between their eyes like a sunkern bit
