So....here's my little 5g (US). The first day I got the potting soil in there, small gravel on top, two small branches and a rock in there. Added two onion plants and two bunches of wendtii (red and green).

This was done yesterday....

Cool, you've nicked my idea! Lol hope it goes well, will be keen to see what you find works and not so I can get a few pointers.

Sam

:hey: So I nicked your idea huh? :hey:

Next day I added some twisted vallis, a small clump of java fern and some other type of plant whose name I have forgotten. It looks something like regular vallis but is supposedly not going to grow nearly as tall. I got three clumps of that. Also added 3 small ghost shrimp and a dwarf gourami. Was going to go with a male betta but the little blue gourami was just too cute!!

Haha

BYW the java fern would probably do better if it was attached to a stone or bogwood as the roots may root if they are buried in the gravel.

Sam

:D Thanks Sam (that's my sons' name too!) :D

Yeah it's been my experience that no matter what I attach the java fern to, it will send its tendrils down into the substrate. I've long ago given up on trying to stop it!!
On a side note, it's been a long, long time since I've had to shop for java fern....man was I surprised by the price of the stuff!! $5.99 for a small clump of it and anubias were going for $7.99!! If I had realised that I would have stripped down the 40g before Pinky shredded the plants and sold them all!!

I'm a bit late on updating this thread. Meant to do this around the 30 day mark and instead it's almost 50 days!

So anyway, everything is doing well for the most part. I had to remove the dwarf gourami as he took a disliking to the twisted val and tore several plants up. He also started to chomp on some other leaves so back to the LFS he went! I still haven't decided which fish to put in there....I was going to go with endlers but as luck would have it, no one seems to have any right now. Then I remembered that theres a killie convention coming to Tampa next month so.....

Anyway, here's the tank. Twisted vals are not doing so great right now but I expect them to improve now that there isn't anything in there to tear them up!

My little low tech tank!

looking good :good: why dont you go with 2 guppies? m and f that will look pretty good, up to you though its your tank
could we plz see a full tank shot?

after looking at yours it gave me an idea for my betta tank that will look good, thnx for the idea :good:

Looking good, looks nice.
But looking at the pics, do you have a cling film background or something, as it seems all wavey.. cant put my finger on it..
Any chance of a full tank shot?

I would agree, looking cool, the java fern is looking especailly green and the crypts look nice and bushy too :)

Sam

Thanks for all the kind comments!! :)

Hate to tell you folks but the first pic is pretty much a full tank shot....it's just a little 5g bowfront! I take lousy pics so it may seem like there's more to the one end but I assure you that's about it!

As for the background, it's something really common, most households have some, yup you guessed right, it's aluminum foil! Just carefully crinkled aluminum foil! Told you it was a low tech tank! ;)

Sorry I'm so late in replying! But yeah Luke_e, the foil is behind the glass (I wouldn't consider putting it inside!). Looks pretty good and it helps with bouncing the light around within the tank too.
Thanks Qays! I thought about guppies, endlers, killies too but as luck would have it, I ended up with a male betta! Just happened to be at the LFS and I saw him and well, you can guess the rest!
