Here's some pictures at 5 weeks and 4 days old: I'm happy with how they're turning out so far. I like when they have the microworm bellies that are just jampacked with microworms :)

A mix of colours:

Some red in the tail:

I don't see any yellow on this one in real life. But, it sure does have a belly eh?:

Quite exciting!

 So, so cute! They're looking awesome, developmentally. I love this stage, they really start looking like Bettas.

I definitely think it's a good idea to start with a small, pretty inexpensive spawn for the first. I'm really excited for my 2nd and 3rd spawns, because I know SO much more now!

Yeah I'm really impressed so far with them. For a pretty much randomly chosen spawn pair, the fry are looking quite nice. I'm not updating pics yet because I really doubt my camera will pick up the subtle changes. More of the fry are getting the juvie-stripes. I see a few of them are getting the black rim around the anal fin like the mom had. I really liked the colouration on the mom, so I'm rooting for these two to continue like they are so far! Almost all are really starting to colour up. It started slowly and faintly, but there ventrals are opaque red now, and their caudals are starting to get pretty opaquely red too (for at least half of them anyways).

Best of all: yesterday I noticed they are now breathing air from the surface. It likely happened earlier, but I didn't notice it until yesterday. So cute to see them dash up mid-feeding for a TINY breath of air :)

Splash, thanks for the compliment. Good to know they're developing on par B)

I probably won't have pics until around the 20th of March. I have a week FULL of exams this week, and then I'm off to the Dominican with 32 people from my class for our reading week (different than the regular undergrad university students because we go longer into the summer) so I won't be on the forum much until then :(

Cheers,

-Ian

Great looking babies and parents you got there, i just love looking at the pictures of them growing, 1 day i hope to have a go myself. as i said great fish

Goodness sake I can't believe they're 5 weeks old already. Where does the time go?

Anyway, good job, they look right on track

they're actually almost 7 weeks now (they will be on monday). I just haven't updated the pics since ~5 weeks! They do look older than they did at 5 weeks, so hopefully they're still on track :)

Time has been flying for me too ;)

Well, I was able to take some more pictures today. The biggest of the nine is starting to grow his fins longer finally. He is still developing some nice colouring to his fins. Surprisingly, my camera was able to capture close to what it looks like in real life! Here's two pics:

1) The rim of 'blue' around the outside of his anal fin appears black in real life...

When would any ray-branching start to occur???

Someone told me the mom might be a type of mustard gas, with red with a darker (blackish almost?) rim around the outside rather than blue and yellow like I often see. If so (and I'm not sure she was right), I'm hoping this one will turn out like her, but be male. Yeah I know, that's a lot to ask for but one can hope ;)

well. the time has flown since I last updated on the spawn. I lost one betta today, so I'm down to 8. There's a large difference in the sizes, but I think they'll most likely ALL end up being smallish for bettas. Here's pics of my favourite one, and one of his/her sibs :) My hopes are still up, that a few might be butterfly-patterned. You can't see the rim of black around the fins, but it's there in real life.

I've been feeding them microworms (rarely now), crushed up flakes (which they finally started eating...and they LOVE them now), frozen brineshrimp (spirulina enriched), and freeze-dried bloodworms (as of today...their mouths are mostly big enough to eat them now...and they really attack the bloodworms!). Anyways, here's two pics. Note their fins are slowly starting to elongate:

1) my favourite of the spawn (he's coloured up the most so far)

2) the fav, and a tankmate

PS: Oh yeah, there's been very little aggression up to this point. I noticed one missing a small piece of his dorsal fin, but it grew back mostly within less than a week. I'm going to change water more often now, and up the feedings a little bit, so I can get them to adult size ASAP. In a week or so, they'll be upgraded to a 10 gallon tank that I'm getting for free. Then, I'll probably start jarring them soon after that (as soon as they start getting more aggressive).
