Ok this is the start of my gradual transformation and I am quite amazed what a difference a substrate change and a quick tank wash out has made. I plan on changing the tank below into a luscious planted tank bit by bit. :D

And here it is with substrate change and quick clean outSTA40049.jpg

Looking much improved already  What substrate are you using ? If you really want to turn it into some "lush" with real plants, you either need something like Eco Complete or a sublayer of Laterite :)

Next up painting the background black :) saturday ill probably get another light from LFS :) Just waiting for my dad to get me some wood too build a new hood, then the week after nutrafin natural CO2 kit :) Then i should be set to grow :hey:

Erm the substrate is sort of small black shiny gravel

yh just using it as a hiding place for the cory for time being until its planted

try coconut shells,i just buy a coconut rub off most of the hairy stuff on the outside with wire brush, sandpaper smash it in half remove coconut boil the shell for 30 mins check for sharp edges and your done they make great caves :D

Thx for the idea :) Sounds good just wondering whether i will need laterite under my gravel or not :/

The only fish i've ever had hide are the bottom feeders and algae eaters, the rest will just hide in the real plants once you get them.

I m no expert on planted tanks but i would use laterite i only have gravel in my tanks but i think i should have used laterite but my plants are growing like crazy at the moment so im not realy worried about it someone will advise you better im sure good luck

If you really seriously want a lush planted tank, I'm afraid you're gonna have to go that route.
It depends how large your tank is, but I would have thought you can get away with the small packet of £10.
You need 28 Grams of First Layer for every 4 Litres of aquarium water and the small packet is 567 grams.

Well the tank is only a 24x12x12 " and I want it with small grass at the front with a bit of riccia and a lot of large green leaved plants towards the back with maybe a couple of red plants and a banana plant cus i like them

I totally agree with Bloozoo and if I establish a new tank, I will go this route. That being said, I have achieved what I consider "lush" growth in my 10g and 15g, and I have just gravel as the substrate. Now, in addition to a strict dosing regimen of liquid fertilizers, I also have several root tabs scattered about the tank. These are replaced every three months. But this tank, and my 15g were already established tanks before they were planted and I couldn't change the substrate.

I really like your gravel, and I will probably do something like that with a bottom layer of laterite for my next tank. It looks like 150% better already. I love that small black gravel, really lovely.
