are they the big huge snails that grow to about 1" and eat the algie off the side of the tank?

Yep the get quite a size but don't eat plants. Heres one of my 24x12x15 tanks full of babies. The babies look to be mainly dark bodies jade and dark bodied brown stripe. The caramel stripe is dad and a jade and a purple stripe are mums. More eggs are floating on the polystyrene at the top.

Hi Tracy,

Its hard to tell from the pic a great site for i'ds is www.applesnail.net if you bought it as a mystery snail it will most likely be an apple snail.
