:alien: i have noticed a white area on the top of my bala's head and am unsure how to treat it.
i have experienced this before with a much smaller shark and with this one i put him in a bag of aquarium water and some salt for about an hour and this seemed to do the trick but am reluctant to do this as he is much bigger and im worried about stressing him out. the area is not fluffy, more like missing scales or a sore? my stats are good and other fish seem to be o.k. maybe a broad range bacterial med would help? what do you lot think?

How many gallons or litres is the tank, full list of stock of how many and which type, just check that you can't see a parasite in that area, is the area abit red.
Also could he off damage his head on something in the tank.

Also don't know if it's me but i can see some white as well in the tail area, or is i the pic.

hello wilder,
he is in a 165ltr tank (click on my name for a full list of fish). the area looks clean and not red, i suppose he could have damaged it as they are a bit scatty and on the smaller one salt did seem to help!
any advise would be gratefully recieved.

p.s. the white on his tail is the flash reflecting on his scales.

You do know they need large tanks as they grow, so do two of the bala's have the same thing, any flicking and rubbing, any laboured breathing.

Well at the moment it could be bacterial or a parasite, so need alot of info too determine which one it is, any excess mucas on the body or gills.

only one bala has this, the other one was a while back. that was the one i treated with a salt bath & went on to recover! i think this one is too big to do the same to.
no mucus and general health seems good(upright fins, nice and shiney)

If no other fish are flicking and rubbing, i would go with bacterial for now.

got some myxazin, enough for a five day course and have started today!
did a 20ltr waterchange and treated straight after, will keep you informed on the outcome-keep your fingers crossed as he is my biggest bala & size is everything!!!!!
