Hey! :D
I have a 20litre / 5.28Gallon hexagon tank. I was wondering if I planted it as much as possible, put a few rocks and try make a few hiding places out of it, would this be good for a betta?

The gravel is red (for decor and colour) and the rocks would probably be smooth.

The plants I'm planning to use would be abit of everything. Those plants that look like spider plants but live underwater are what I would be using the most. Is there any plant that this fish loves / prefers?

Also, does a betta living on its own acctually need a filter? I was thinking about just keeping the under gravel filter to like keep the water oxidised.

Would a 7.5Watt heater keep 20litre / 5.28Gallon of water heated at the right temperature for a betta to flourish? :D

Are there any ways I could improve a tank this small?

Sounds like a wonderful tank! I don't know if the heater would be good for that tank as I'm not very wood with wattages, but the filter is optional. Bettas aren't too keen on filters that disturb the water much (water return is too strong), so the UGF should do. If you have the filter on it then you will be able to do, say, a 25% water change a week, instead of a 100% change.

Just get a second opinion on the heater, and I don't see why that tank wouldn't be a betta heaven. Since it is a 5G, you could even put some pygmy cories or kuhli loaches in there. African dwarf (not clawed) frogs would be greeat too.

Im relatively new to bettas my self, but one thing i do know is that the tank you described is more than adequate, obviously the bigger the better but some of the things that pass for a betta's home is absoultely disgusting!!!

see pic! ANYBODY SEEING THIS....THIS IS NOT SUITABLE IN ANYWAY, MAYBE FOR THE TRASH

One thing with bettas, their decor should be safe enough so that they canot harm their fins, rough rocks/plants are a no go!

Thanks

Danny

Yeah sorry forgot! need a bigger heater, ive got a hex tank and i had to get a bigger heater, as for tank mates, ive got a thread open on the subject, no corys im afraid(i wanted some too), see mt thread when its done for ideas!

My new heater is a visi therm 50w, its far better!!

How horrible is that betta home....sorry not home...hell!!

here's my hex tank, with silk plants

in my 5 gall hex i have 1 betta and a 50 watt heater

sounds like you're going down the right track!

Ok thanks for the agreements and advice.
I too thought this would be a good idea and the rough rocks I am not even going any where near because the betta I have in the kitchen had an ornement with just a tiny little chip in and its fins had rips in them. It was terrible.
Ive seen stuff bettas live in like a tiny pint sized vase holding on to a little stand that could wobble every where. This things shouldn't hold a betta at all! They could barely live in it, never mind flourish.

What I planned is in my mind, the best a 16 year old could come up with in a day and the most beautiful I can think of too (from what I have anyway).

The lid and little stand thingy are blue so I bought red gravel a while ago to bring the most colour i could think of coz the opposite to blue...red?

I don't know what colour betta to get tho. Either blue? or red? Which would look the best? Anyone?

Also, I really need to get the heating up to 78-80oC. Ive put it to near the radiator but its only at 75 at the moment

Anyone good at electrics? :/

My hex isn't that big. Mines only like 5.28Gallons so I don't wanna boil my betta. I was thinking of a 7.5 Watt coz its classed as a mini heater for small tanks. Im guessing it'd raise the temps up about 2 maybe 3oC

Go with whatever grabs your attention first, have a look at some sites, depending where you are you could get it mailed to you.

Check out other peoples pics and see what you like then look for something with the same colours, dont forget there is more than one type of betta

The heater i got with my tank was 28w and struggled to get past 24 degc, boot 74f.which isnt enough.
you need to keep the temp steady. my tank's 5.7 gal, so not too much difference to yours.

Id invest in a new heater to be on the safe side

a 50 watt is fine for 5 gallons in my opinion
never had any problems with it
any smaller will struggle to heat the whole tank.

and a temp of around 75-76 is fine for a betta
it doesn't need to be right up to 80, my bettas don't thrive when it's that warm

and bettas can come in other colours other than blue or red, just need to search for them.
:)

Yerakno, but I was thinking like if I stuck to the colours, it would look its best.
I was thinking stay away from something like yellow n stuff because it would look outta place.

btw, i didnt mean oC...i meant oF

At the moment its only 72oF and i doubt it would be warm enough for it

it doesnt matter if it looks outaplace, if you like it, and the personality then who cares right! :D

That would actually make your fish stand out fromt the decor, rather than sink into the background.

For instance: I have maroon gravel, green plants, and a dark grey bridge, and a pinkish/white female. It makes it very easy to see her

This is my tank.. 22Ltrs no fake plants all real- Added a few rocks and alot more plants since this picture.
Hope your betta is as happy as mine!

I have live plants with 2 bettas and fake with another one. They like plants at the surface so if you just float one--they love to hide in there and make bubblenests in them too. My old one needs something to rest in and so he can be close to surface as he's so bottom heavy. I got this rubber kind fake plant at Pet-sm*rt as a close out that no one else wanted. It's too high for the tank but lops over just perfectly so Finn can hide in there. You're on the right track with not getting any kind of plant that can tear their fins and that goes for rocks too. I have a Stealth 25w heater for 2 tanks-one 10 gallon and one 5 1/2 gallon- and those are just great. They're reliable and you can adjust the temp on them. They're a good brand so I feel secure about them not frying up when I'm away from home. I paid $22 USD for each--something close to that. It does pay to get a better brand on that as they can overheat and you need to be able to adjust the temps. The old one likes his temp at 80 but the younger more active ones like theirs at 78 or 79--in that area. Good luck with your betta and keep us posted!
PS -- Contrasting colors are always good! You'd be surprised what colors can compliment each other. Some of my neighbors were shocked when I painted my house a bright green, with blue steps, blue and teal striped awnings, purple squares on the back door and this summer they'll be even more shocked when I put up dusty rose window boxes.
