Well today i went to a shop i rarely visit and they had several bettas in mixed community tanks, i came home with this little guy as he was getting beat up by a group of emperor tetras and others.

He seems to have a deformed mouth and he's small compared to the others in the shop. I have him in a bowl which holds just under a gallon at the minute with some java moss and riccia floating on the surface, I have put the bowl on top of a larger tank to keep him warm and i think i'll float the bowl in the tank overnight.

He's looking ragged at the minute should i treat him with some melafix or pimafix?

This is only a temporary situation, once i know he's disease free he'll be sharing an 8 gallon tank with my adfs.

Oh and what type is he veil ?

Any suggestions for names ?

Emma

he looks like a VT for me, a pretty one at that!
i wouldn't treat him with melafix just yet, unless it looks like he's getting fin rot or another infection
let him settle for a day first, with a little tiny bit of aquarium salt.

that's what i would do anyway.
i don't know primafix, i only have melafix which i use occasionally on my little ragged betta who self-mutilates his tail, but only then when he's just done it. too much meds will have adverse effects on them.

Hmm... not sure if its just me, but some of the red looks a little less pattern like and a bit more septacaemia like -_- Not sure though.... He's very pretty though

Kyo!!! A suggestion for a name. . . (ref:Samurai Deeper Kyo & the betta's red coloring in his tail).

Good rescue!!

Some of the red looks a little worrying (the fact that it's two-toned), but like catxx said, I'd let him settle in a bit of salt first before trying any meds. What worries me more is that he looks quite thin.... is it just the angle of the pic? His look just has that TB feel to me, but hopefully I'm wrong -_-

update:

He's still around this morning, the red colouring looks more purply red on his tail and near his body, then it goes to a blood red. He ate like a pig yesterday he had blood worms, flake and a few granules, is this ok or should i get a food specifically for bettas. Also today he had a red poo, is this just the blood worms or something more sinister?

I'm keeping him on his own then it is easier to treat him if things go wrong. Not sure if he's just thin because he was getting bullied at the shop, he had been there a while the man said but no one saw him as he kept hiding in the plants, hardly surprising when a load of fish piled on him every time he came out.

If he improves over the next couple of weeks i'll try him with the frogs. He's my first betta but i'm sure there will be many more.

Emma :)

Hi,

Well i have named him Kyo as sukie suggested, he is such an ugly little thing but full of character, i went to a different shop on thursday with the intention of getting a healthy betta so that i could compare his progress but i ended up with another rescue, i'll post him seperately.

Here's a new pic, he'll be moving from the bowl to a 2 gallon tank tomorrow when my mum brings it to my house.
