Yesterday I brought a tank filter for £3. I got it from Pets at Home. Its like a little cartridge in its own holder. you connect it up to your airpump and it filters your tank. This morning when I woke up the water was crystal clear and the filter was full of grime. Surprisingly it is very good. You don't have to clean it out either when it is dirty you throw it away and buy a new one. Its as simple as that. It is excellent and I would definatly recommend it.I have put a picture of it below. The website you can find them is also below.

I bought one once to see what it was like when I was very new to fish keeping and I'm so glad that I binned it. I kept the little pump that came with it so I can still use that purely for airstones to provide more oxygen, since that's all it's really good for.
Those filters aren't very good to be honest... in fact they are actually detrimental to the health of your tank. Every time you remove the filter and start again with a fresh cartridge you are removing all the beneficial bacteria found in the filter media which helps to break down fish waste and excess food. That sort of filter is a waste of money in my opinion... they are designed to make you keep buying new cartridges and after a while you've spent so much money on them that you may as well have bought yourself a decent internal power filter that would be able to filter far more gallons in an hour and needn't be constantly replaced. I hope you aren't using that tiny filter in your overstocked goldfish tank because it really doesn't have enough power -_-

That really is a no good filter for goldfish... bettas and breeding tanks maybe, but not goldfish.

Exactly, however, since it's a little late for changing it, DO NOT CHANGE THE CARTRIDGE. As said, that is a ploy for you to buy more cartriges, when all you have to do is break off some of the grill, take out the carbon/zeolite mix, rinse the sponge and replace the said carbon/zeolite with filter floss or a sponge.

You can actually open the container with the cartridge and foam and clean them out, I have one for emergencies, but being the stingy person that I am I decided to see if I could recycle the cartridge and you can, the only thing is that you need to put a rubber band around it to close it up again (no problem that).
But the foam it comes with is not much cop so change it for a more porous spone - got mine from a garden centre with a pond shop you can buy large sheets of sponge with differnt hole sizes for a fraction of the price you pay for them at the local lf's.

yea.. spose with another filter its a good extra for carbon etc. as its easy to change if you want to add meds n stuff.. i get annoyed when i keep having to disturb the main filter just to replace some carbon :X
