If you bought the filter bnew you could run it at a friend's mature tank for a week before fishless cycling on yours. It's an alternative to "seeding" with someone else's media.

I have some spare unused driftwood which I have sprayed with insecticide last week due to a minor infestation of cockroaches. Now I would like to use this for a new tank but unsure if its safe or not. Would soaking it in water get rid of the insecticide and if so how long will it take? Thanks!

Chloramine will not dissipate as easily and some say it's not even possible to fully remove it by aging. Chloramine is used by some newer water plants to replace chlorine. Make sure your water provider only uses chlorine if you plan to age water. More info here...

I can see that you have other tanks. Did you get filter media from these other tanks? If not you can try to run an established filter on the new tank or your new filter on an established tank, preferably the 10G one. And yes, bacteria growth is inhibited at low PH.

I would go for the 21" height because higher tanks require stronger lighting for plants. One thing you should remember is that light should be able to reach the bottom of the tank, otherwise the lower leaves might turn yellow and eventually die. My tank's dimensions are 48x14x20 and I'm using...

2 females are more aggressive than male+female or 2 males? Btw it's too late. Found one ram dead this morning. It's so annoying. :angry: The other one seems to be happily swimming around the tank. Doesn't seem stressed out so I don't think there's a problem with my water quality, etc.
