I think you need a much wider tank. Not unless your 17 gallon tank is a flat shallow pan.

I feed live bearer fry culls to my bettas. I feel that that is responsible than dumping them somewhere where they can multiply and disrupt the nature's balance. Just my opinion. and yes, coincidentally, I also enjoy the chase.

I agree. My bettas feast on leaf hoppers every summer. I'm from the counryside by the way. Leafhoppers are pestd to crops.
