So, I've gotten some peacock gudgeons (1 male, 2 females) and have recently run into a very odd problem. Oh the problem isn't that they won't eat. They're little pigs and will devour anything and even chase their tankmates away from their feeding area. No, the problem is my male gudgeon...

I have, but aren't they coldwater? I'll consider them. They are rather cute. At the moment, I'm in Savannah, but at various times of the year I can be found lurking nearish to Marietta.

So, I've gotten a nice 10 gallon (40L) tank recently. I'm currently fishless cycling it and watching all the trimmings from a friend's tank begin to take hold and grow. And as I sit here and gaze at my empty and slowly developing tank, I of course am wondering, "What can I put in this thing?"...

It's a fine dream to be sure, but the bitterly cynical part of me knows it just will not happen. Superstores have one moral compass, and that is profit. If it increases profit, they will probably consider it. Putting bettas in small containers is cheap and efficient and easy for the customers...

Most fish don't. When they sleep, they sleep like geckos and snakes: they lie still and breathe more slowly. I imagine people sometimes confuse them for being dead since they don't seem to move or see anything for a couple of moments.

Mine was small as well when I got him and his finnage was also a little short compared to other bettas (and go figure I got him from Petco too). Since then, he's probably grown about 50% in size...so yours is probably just a young one. I've noticed that the Petco near me also tends to get...

The side of the tank is against the wall and it's probably turning that corner into a mirror. Try moving your tank a few inches away from the wall and see if that helps.

ROFL. I'm sorry. But they are LIVE plants, silly. ;) Living things do have a tendency to grow. Anyway...I'll be helpful. When you get live plants from the store, you do end up with more than you started with merely because...they grow. :shifty:

You can use rubber bands...but they're kind of unsightly. Cotton thread works nicely, as it will rot away by the time the plants have taken root.

Yes I've heard of it. And my betta does it everytime his tail grows too long. It's not really fin rot so much as it is like your betta is ripping his tail by accident. Think of it as tearing a piece of tissue paper by pulling on it too hard...that's basically what happens. The betta will...

Well, I know when mine blows his tail in one of his over zealous exhibitions of attitude, his tail is a little clamped until I put in a little Melafix. I think it's a reaction to pain and the Melafix seems to soothe it. Or if I don't do anything he relaxes after a while. And the "chin" fins...

It can take a couple weeks for the tissue to grow back and be coloured. (When it starts to grow back it's transparent.) And then it depends on how much of the fin is missing before all of it is back.

They're like little living manifestations of colour and light--fish that played in the paint buckets when the gods were painting the universe. =) Very beautiful.

I think you need more plants. If I'm not mistaken, controlling algae is all about balancing your plants and conditions such that the plants always have the upperhand. One way to do this is to really fill up your tank with plants. I would also lessen the time your lights are on.

I think...Walmart should have stopped growing in "types of stuff" when they were providing supplies that were Eckard (Wallgreens) and Office Max combined. It really should have ended there. I think that their idea of selling anything living and selling produce, deli, dairy, meats...is just...
