I'd have to second (third?) getting cories... I'm definitely a little biased, but I've had a lot of success keeping them with bettas. They are very active and fun to watch snuffling around for food, come in a bunch of different colors, and tend to get on well with bettas IME.

I think a lot of people breed bettas (or other animals) either out of love of the species or maybe even in an attempt to improve it by carefully picking partners with healthy or desireable traits... if it's just a kid sticking two bettas he got off the shelf together and hoping they make babies...

Personally I have had a lot of success keeping cories and bettas together; but I've only kept my gentler bettas with cories. I have never tried putting cories in with my aggressive red. It all depends on the personality of the betta, really. I had one very docile one that thought he was a cory...

For awhile I loved the CTs... but I think I'm back to VT, love how their tails look when they move. :hyper:

One tail type really isn't more nippy than another, from my experience. Actually, it seems like the larger the fish when young, the more aggressive he is. A plakat could work well. I've started to see them locally as 'king bettas,' kind of the new 'popular' tail type locally.

My betta boy enjoys schooling with our peppered cories now and again. He seems to mainly be looking for whatever food they're getting so he can get it first, the little piggy! He once spent twenty minutes guarding an algae pellet. :blink: I dunno if it's 'normal', but it hasn't hurt anybody.

I am ashamed to admit I was part of that 'betta in a vase' craze way back when. Luckily, I learned the truth early enough in his life that my big red VT spent the majority of his life in a nice big tank, but still! :-(

One of my bettas, that I've had for going on four years (and he was already an adult when I got him from the lfs) has been going blind I believe. He sticks close to his plants and doesn't react to anyone's presence, not even the cats. He will come over and flare at the spot if I tap lightly on...
