Keep testing and changing water if you get any ammonia readings I am a bit surprised that you have any ammonia at all if you're using Purigen, but I've never used it myself, so can't really comment on it. Carbon is really a waste of time, unless you're using it to remove tannins from the water. It doesn't make much difference what you use as long as you don't clean it...

That's a high ammonia level; do a big water change ASAP! I'll happily donate some media; I'm in Launceston though; bit of a long drive for you (I don't drive, or I'd offer to meet you halfway) Or I could pop some in the post for you; most of the bacteria survive a day or two in the post.
