What about some Tanganyikan Shelldweller cichlids... high PH... hard water... small size... interesting behaviour... easily to breed once established...
bogwood releases tanins into the water... nothing to worry about... boiling and soaking the wood before placing in your tank will prevent excessive 'leakage'... some fish prefer a tanin water...
Is it correct that 'Multis' only need an inch or so of sand substrate - as they don't strictly 'bury' their shells like other shelldwellers but just 'move' the sand from around the shells... in other words, why give them more sand to move/make more work for them?...

I am setting up a shelldweller cichlid tank and need a sand substrate... I use Silica sand (pale brown, not ultra fine) in my community tank with no probs... but have also seen the much finer grain size, almost white 'Silver' sand...

I am setting up a shelldweller cichlid tank... these fish are manic burrowers so plants are a no go really... so, I was thinking of a 3D background... I've seen some authentic looking 'rock' facia backgrounds but they cost a fortune... are there any 'cheaper' decent looking alternatives...
My sister has a pair of Black Mollys... the female gave birth just yesterday... the fry are max. 5mm in size... and 'cocky' to say the least... they are already eating the ends off bloodworms... and chasing the White Cloud Mountain Minnows away for the surface flake!... all at just 30 hrs old...
